What is the seating arrangement in schools? Is it alphabetical? How are the students assigned?

It depends on the class, school and prefecture, but typically, a new school year starts with the Japanese alphabetical order which starts with "a-i-u-e-o". The Internet tells me that some prefectures start the year per birthdays. Then pretty soon, the seating would be changed. Sometimes the homeroom teacher just assigns the new seating, or it would be decided using "amidakuji" lottery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_LegStudents with good reasons such as eyesight problems would be typically assigned per the student's request. This is just for reference. https://dime.jp/genre/991046/
